Bossed Up is a LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & career services company on a mission to close the gender leadership gap.

How We Roll:

Progress over Perfection

We get it: life is messy. The journey towards achieving your most audacious goals can be a long and lonely process.

Here at Bossed Up we celebrate progress over perfection. We focus on making steady, incremental movements toward a happy, healthy, and sustainable career & life over the pursuit of overnight success.

Community is Everything

Here at Bossed Up we encourage women to “lift as we climb,” to live true to the original motto of our nations’s first Black Women’s advocacy organization.

We believe in creating courage through community. No one can boss up on their own, which is why we care about creating conditions for connection in everything we do.

IntersectionalITY OR BUST

Our experiences as women differ based on age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, neurology, class, culture, and so much more. Those differences matter and we strive to honor them with nuance and thoughtfulness in everything we do.

“I BELIEVE IN PLAYING THE CARDS WE'VE BEEN DEALT, wHILE CHANGING THE GAME.”

Emilie Aries, Bossed Up's Founder & CEO

Our Story

Our Story

Bossed Up was founded in Washington, DC in 2013 after our founder, Emilie, found herself completely burnt out from working as a grassroots organizer and political strategist. Despite being a professional advocate, she found it difficult to advocate for the life and career she wanted, and soon learned many women felt the same. In July 2013, Bossed Up Bootcamp, our premiere weekend-long leadership training, launched to a sold-out crowd. Women came together to clarify their vision, gain courage through community, and hone their skills for self-advocacy.

Now headquartered in Denver, CO, the Bossed Up team has been providing research-driven, impact-oriented training programs both online and in person ever since.

In March 2020, all in-person speaking and training ceased due to the COVID-19 global health crisis and 100% of planned operations were cancelled. Faced with this existential threat, the Bossed Up team rallied together to navigate our small business pivot by listening closely to our community’s needs, innovating quickly, and rolling out 3 new programs in 6 months: HIRED, Level Up, and Speak Up, all of which sold out upon release and resulted in the complete turn-around of our small business. We’re delighted to offer more accessible, virtual programming now than ever before to support our community during this time of collective need.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, & Anti-Racism

As an organization that’s always been inspired by hip hop, it’s worth mentioning our Active Anti-Racism & Justice Plan, which we instituted in 2020 to be more thoughtful about the debt we owe to communities of color and how we are actively pursuing social justice in our approach to business.

Let’s work together
