How to Use Social Media to Land Your Next Job [WEBINAR]

We know social media can be a huge time-waster, right? But do you realize how those very same tools can be leveraged to lead to your next job offer?

  1. Be proactive about your job search

Applying to jobs online and hoping you’ll be noticed is not enough. “People hire people,” says Emmelie, “so talk to people!” Social media can help, and Emmelie recommends maintaining an up-to-date profile on LinkedIn and Twitter at a minimum. “Even if you’re not super active on them, maintain a baseline presence so people can find you.” She also recommends making the most of Instagram and / or a personal website (think or to tell the story of who you are and what you’re into.

Learn to “own what you know,” Emmelie says, “and update your accounts regularly to share knowledge, original content, or news about what you’re up to.” You want to make it easy for recruiters to find you (and psst – they use social media, too!).


  1. Be a creator, not just a curator

Creating original content is the best way to establish your thought leadership. “And it doesn’t need to be hard,” says Emmelie, “you don’t need to write a book! Start small!” Need some content ideas? Start with making lists (like this one, if you noticed!) and help make it easy for your readers to get your top tips.

Even if you just post one piece of original content a month, that can go a long way. Consider cross-posting on other sites with built-in traffic like, where you’re more likely to get noticed. Of course, then you’ll want to link to your most recent posts on all your social networks, too!

The overarching idea here: say something that shows your future employer that you know your stuff!


  1. Get into the VIP room

Once you’ve applied to a job, get a referral from the inside-out. Know a friend who knows a friend in the company? Reach out. Use LinkedIn people search to find what kinds of connections you have that you might not even know about (more on that here).

You don’t want to wait in line (or rather, in a sky-high stack of resumes). You need to get into that VIP section, boss! So reach out and make a good impression with anyone within the company – preferably the hiring manager, of course – to make that extra imprint.
